I don’t have time to fully dissect Anne Coulter’s most recent column for Human Events, but I will make a couple of quick points.
First off, it should be noted that the Constitutional rights of would be Times Square car bomber Faisel Shahzad were not “granted” by anybody, they are merely guaranteed by the U.S. government. That’s part of what set us apart from monarchies that granted titles and the privileges that go with them. Yes, as a citizen, Shahzad has the same rights as “Paris Hilton facing a drunk driving charge”, but those are also the same rights Paris would have if facing multiple homicide charges. Though let’s remember, Shahzad was questioned by the FBI using a Public safety exception to the Miranda rule.
Secondly, in all her rush to remind us of our implacable and religiously deranged enemy, Anne fails to remember the key point of jihadist belief: they don’t mind dying.
“How many future car bombers would be discouraged if Faisal Shahzad were tried by military tribunal and executed by, say, the end of the month?” I don’t know Anne, four or five? Just how frightened would you be of a possible future death sentence when you fully expect to blow yourself up on a plane or in Times Square? Admittedly, Faisel is the oddity here in that he actually planned to get away, but to think that is the now de rigor amongst jihadists seems a little naive.
Say it with me Anne, don’t have to ignore the Constitution to get tough on terrorists.
